Decisions. They can be overwhelming for some. I am super glad I changed my nutrition if only for one thing – I never have to walk down the cereal aisle in a grocery store again and try to make a decision. I mean, seriously, that is just ridiculous. Becoming basically vegetarian was also fantastic if only to cut down on my decisions at restaurants. I can decide what to eat at Texas Roadhouse in about 5 seconds. Some who have come to my home and see what is kept in my cupboards and refrigerator, or those who see me with a mason jar full of some green concoction, have given me a comment or a face that clearly states their overwhelmed feeling from the thought of their health choices ever resembling mine. As if the chasm is just too large and the decisions too many or too hard. Well, I try to reassure them with the following advice, which is perhaps the best thing I have ever been told regarding nutrition and health and really ALL areas of life; focus on adding, not subtracting, and focus on one thing at a time. That is where I started several years ago… and from adding one thing at a time, I have come a long way!
This brings me to a change I actually made this past year, which is what I am going to encourage you to do starting tomorrow, if you are not already (I like practical application, just so you know, I want your time here to be worthwhile!). It is SO SIMPLE AND EASY that ANYONE can do it, you don’t have to get anything new, and then you can be proud of yourself as you will be on your way to better health. No more “shoulda, coulda, woulda”… take it as your starting point for the rest of your future health if you are nutritionally in a bad place. Here it is:
Drink 16-32 ounces of water, every morning, as soon as you get out of bed.
I know, I hear some of you right now. “But shouldn’t I only drink room temperature water? Or only ice cold water? Shouldn’t it only be filtered, or reverse osmosis, or alkaline, or Fiji, or mountain spring, or holy water? Shouldn’t I add salt, or vinegar, or lemon, or dirt or some sorta powder?” My answer is this – ANY water is better in the morning than what most drink, which is none! Focus on ONE thing, and progress from there. We can read so much contradicting information on nutrition, we suddenly feel like we are making the wrong choice no matter what. We need to take a deep breath, and just do the easy thing to start – drink water. Start by drinking it right outta your tap. I give you permission.
For other type A’s out there, I will add this, do not measure your water in the morning! If you have a big glass, fill it up once or twice or somewhere in between. Do not get hung up on the numbers. I speak from experience.
I started doing this simple thing every morning and I can feel the difference. Water is so important to our bodies, you may notice changes from this one addition. We blame many things for aches, pains, fatigue, headaches, etc etc that are often simply caused by dehydration. We often eat when we are really just thirsty. I cannot emphasize the importance of water enough. It is honestly fascinating to me to take a seed, like hulled sunflower seeds, that have been in my cupboard for a long time, soak them in water for a few hours, then strain them, rinse them a couple times a day for a couple days, and suddenly they are growing! Green sprouts come shooting out! Or take a plant that has been neglected for a while and it’s leaves are wilted, give it a good drink of water and a couple hours later the leaves are taut and straight. It is revived. Our body reacts in much the same way. Give it water, and we become more alive and look healthier. Nothing can replace water. It is a necessity for life.
Once your morning water has become routine, which will be sooner or later depending on each person, then you can progress to the next step – the room temp, salty water is not going anywhere. It will be waiting for you :). Another day, I’ll share with you some next steps I have taken.
